Helena Steel began tutoring in 11-plus in 2009 when she needed an English tutor for her son’s 11-plus process. She decided to take on the role herself and has never looked back. She is in awe of children’s minds; how they can absorb and retain information, their brilliant creativity and how they can improve across the whole curriculum (including foreign languages, science and maths) with a little help with their English. She studied Law at UCL, is a qualified solicitor, a published poet and has been a judge on the 2020 500 words competition. She runs The Story Room, a creative writing business that started in London and has attracted children nationally and internationally to join their creative writing and 11-plus classes. Her favourite books are Once (Morris Gleitzman) and Cider with Rosie (Laurie Lee).
Alpa has over a decades experience in tutoring maths and English. Her love of working with young children was evident from the age of 15 when she began to teach children Gujrati at a local language school. Having trained as a chartered accountant Alpa felt that there was always something missing in her career and this was fulfilled when she started working with children. She feels 11 plus journey is a unique experience and are privileged to be able to help children in these pivotal years to build a foundation that will support them for the rest of their lives. Through years of experience Alpa has developed methods of teaching and simplifying even the most complex of problems so that children can understand what is required of them. An avid reader, her favourite books are Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) and the Tempest (Shakespeare).
Alpa and Helena joined forces as Succeed in 2015. They knew that with their joint efforts that their tutees would have the very best preparation for their exams. They found that there was a lack of mocks in their local area that reflected the difficulty of the exams that children would be facing. Providing a realistic mock experience for the children they taught was important to them, so they started to write and mark mock papers and from that Succeed grew and grew.
They have helped hundreds of children gain entry to their first choice school including; City of London (girls and boys), St.Pauls, Dame Alice Owens, Latymer, Henrietta Barnet, Queen Elizabeth Boys, Haberdashers (girls and boys), St Albans, Channing, St Michael’s Catholic School, U.C.S, Dubai College (U.E.A), Sevenoaks, Highgate, Merchant Taylor Benedeen, North London Collegiate, Highgate, Mill Hill Palmers Green High, St John’s (Enfield), and Queenswood.
